Scotland Winter 2022

With a forecast of wet then icy weather we headed North with a degree of excitement. First stop was Kirkcudbright in the Dumfries and Galloway area, and several days shooting from dawn into the dark from a variety of hides. In two and a half days we caught up with otters, sparrowhawks, tawny owls, pine martins and many woodland birds.

Seeing a male otter from just a few feet away is a remarkable experience!

The following day saw us up early in the hope of seeing sparrowhawks at a woodland hide. A young juvenile male had taken up residence and was chasing off any rivals - the action though extremely brief was fast and furious when the two clashed.

Another late night gave us our first ever views of a wild pine martin.

Last but not least from the hides were fantastic sightings of a tawny owl.

A little weary after two and a half days of intense concentration, we carried on up to Glencoe arriving just as the weather became wintery. We had two days of snowy conditions, with both Rannoch Moor and the mountains looking at their very best.
