Talks

We give talks on wildlife photography topics which have proven to be very popular with camera clubs, wildlife trust groups and birdwatching organisations. Typically these are designed to last 1 1/2 to 2 hours but can be customised to suit the audience. We have five talks at the moment.

Madagascar: The Eighth Continent

Madagascar is remarkable for it's range of unique wildlife - 80% of its species of plants and animals are found here and nowhere else on earth. Perhaps most well known of these are the many species of lemurs. This talk starts with an explanation of how this unusual and exotic diversity came to be, explores some of the local customs and modern day people, before heading into rainforest, spiny forest and desert in search of plants, bugs, birds and primates. Along the way, we're happy to share tips and techniques for photography in some difficult environments.

South: In the footsteps of Shackleton

This talk takes us South, to the Falklands, South Georgia and the Antarctica Peninsula, following in the footsteps of the great explorers of "the heroic age", most especially Ernest Shackleton. Along the way we encounter ice, penguins, seals and albatrosses and find relics of the great whales and the men will risked all to hunt them.

Over the years we've wondered as much about the "why" we take pictures as much as the actual content of the photographs themselves. This talk aims to explain a little of what motivates us using pictures captured in the more notherly parts of the world including trips to Scotland, Alaska, Svarlbard and the Lofoten Islands. Expect the odd quote from the old masters and non-competition photography aiming to give a sense of place and capture emotion with portfolios rather than single images.

Kusafiri

The Swahili word "Kusafiri" means "to go on a journey." This talk covers some of our many trips over the years to Africa including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, South Africa and Namibia, sometimes on safari in search of wildlife and landscapes but also for a spell as teachers in a rural school.

Rainforest

Our latest talk covers photography in the Central and South American rainforests, principally Costa Rica, Ecuador and Panama. It covers a range of techniques which we used to try and photograph the whole ecosystem (as much as that is possible) from the largest trees to the smallest insects. There is particular emphasis on the use of flash for creative lighting and gives ideas for how the same techniques can be used in a UK setting.
